2009 is going to be a year of fundamental importance for the entire International Movement of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. A number of anniversaries - which do not just remark the historical importance of the greatest humanitarian organization worldwide, but also reinforce the idea toward today’s and tomorrow’s challenges – will overlap this year. 2009 is marked by the 150th anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant’s idea, the 90th anniversary of the founding of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the 60th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, and the 50th anniversary of the founding of the International Museum of Red Cross in Castiglione delle Stiviere. Heading toward such a unique date, the IFRC and the Italian Red Cross decided to organize a series of events which celebrate the birth of the idea of a Movement built upon Seven Principles. The idea of a Movement where the power of one can make a difference in changing the world, and in which all volunteers are called to bring new and proactive motives to face challenges, threats, and humanitarian emergencies. The Solferino 2009 commemorations is a concrete expression of this idea. It will take place between June 23-28th, 2009 in Solferino, Italy, where the famous battle occurred. This monumental event will attract thousands of people from 186 National Societies.

The events will take place within the Humanitarian Village, a campsite organized by the Italian Red Cross, to host the volunteers that gather to celebrate the birth of the Movement. It will host the “Youth on the move”, 3rd world youth meeting, the Humanitarian Boulevard, a large area offering exciting activities, trainings, exhibitions, and the memorable Fiaccolata candle light procession, which will conclude the Solferino commemorations on the evening of June 27th. From June 28th to July 3rd, some of the youth participating in the “Youth on the move” will conclude the events with a Journey to Geneva, following the footsteps of Henry Dunant's return home after the Battle of Solferino. Remembering the past in order to build a better future is the theme of the Solferino 2009 Celebrations. In essence we are celebrating the abiding strength of Henry Dunant’s idea, which was able to change the world in the last 150 years. On the other hand, we continue to look at the present and the future, to a world full of challenges and threats, which every volunteer in the Movement can significantly contribute to improve. | |
