DREF Operation Update # 3: Italy Earthquake
The situation
CHF 700,000 (USD 613,944 or EUR 460,808) has been allocated from the International Federation’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Italian Red Cross in delivering immediate assistance to 15,000 beneficiaries and to replenish emergency stocks.
This DREF operation is an opportunity for Partner National Societies and donors to support the Italian Red Cross in its ongoing operations, and un-earmarked contributions to replenish the DREF
are therefore highly encouraged.

OVER 600,000 MEALS SERVED, 4522 VOLUNTEERS ON THE FIELD
AND MANY MORE READY TO GO
An extraordinary demonstration of solidarity, both from Italy and abroad has permitted the Italian Red Cross to raise significant funds from voluntary donations. To date, more than 6 million Euros have been raised (6.017.152,21 is the exact sum). The funds raised by the ItRC will be used in Abruzzo to provide social and health care assistance and to cater to the needs of the population. Even if the media attention has ceased, the Red Cross is present in the areas hit by the earthquake where the homeless are still in need of everything. The number of Red Cross volunteers and operators engaged in the activities providing relief, assistance and support to the population of Abruzzo is now 4522. Hundreds of volunteers are on a waiting list ready to leave.
The Italian Red Cross is running nine camps: Pescomaggiore, Cagnano Amiterno, Acciano, San Benedetto di Bagno, Assergi, San Gregorio, Collemaggio, Coppito and Centicolella (over 5000 beds). More than 616,000 meals have been provided since the beginning of the emergency.
Six Advanced Medical Posts, 4 playrooms offered by the Ministry for Equal Opportunities, Happy Family Onlus, run by the Italian Red Cross, with a capacity for 200 children. Inside tables, chairs, footballs, toys, blackboards, games, televisions, videogames and DVDs. In the camp of Centicolella a Veterinary Unit is operational and to date has had 40 visits. The children have been involved in pet-therapy activities based on animal-man interaction. This Red Cross service, guaranteed by 3 vets and 2 assistants, is the only one available in the camps and is also able to carry out surgery.
The SEP teams for psychosocial support are active and at present close to the families hit by the tragedy. 10 volunteer psychologists and 10 volunteers are providing psychosocial support
