Solferino 2019: the traditional event becomes a historical celebration
This year, the traditional gathering in the places that inspired Henry Dunant’s idea of the Red Cross, the reunion in Solferino of the Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and operators from 17 to 23 June 2019, turns into a historical and symbolic celebration, on the occasion of the celebrations for the Centenary of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Youth Meeting - gathering hundreds of young volunteers from all over the world.
Thousands will meet in the places where the battle for Italian unity took place in 1859, which led to the creation of what has become, over the years, the largest voluntary organization in the world.
IFRC 100 Year Anniversary
Founded in 1919 on the initiative of the American Red Cross and the Allied Powers of World War I, the IFRC is headed by the Italian Red Cross National President, Francesco Rocca, the first Italian ever to lead it, and has as its humanitarian mission to independently support people in order to protect their dignity.
Today, it is made of 191 National Societies and its strength is the immense worldwide network of volunteers: about 14 million people supporting 160 million people in need each year. During emergencies caused by natural disasters, the National Societies and the IFRC are the first to intervene.
International Youth Meeting
At Solferino 2019, there will be also a gathering of the youth of the International Movement: from 17 to 23 June, with 4th International Youth Meeting will take place, a significant opportunity to strengthen the already strong ties between National Societies and listen to the voices of the Red Cross and Red Crescent of tomorrow. This is above all a celebration for the thousands of young people involved in a concrete and daily humanitarian action in their own Countries.
Saturday June 22nd, #AccendiLaFiaccola
Saturday 22nd of June will be the peak of the Solferino event, when the traditional torchlight procession from Solferino to Castiglione delle Stiviere will take place, along the way walked by rescuers who transported the wounded during the Solferino battle. A unique and evocative event, illuminated by the light of thousands of torches that - together with the enthusiasm of the volunteers - will revive the magic of a centuries-old story.
The Red Cross Camp
The Red Cross Camp, set up in Castiglione delle Stiviere in the locality of Ghisiola, will host thousands of volunteers from all over the world.
Many activities are planned: from training courses on the topics that are most relevant to the daily activities of Red Cross volunteers, to live concerts in the evenings. Italian Red Cross merchandising will be available and partners involved in the realization of the event will have their own stands.
Media partner: on the occasion of its 20th anniversary, Radio24 has chosen the Italian Red Cross and Solferino 2019 to start the celebrations.
