The role of women in the humanitarian sector: from Castiglione women to present days
On the occasion of Solferino 2019 celebrations, an exhibition will be opened at the historical Museum of Castiglione delle Stiviere on “The Role of Women in the Humanitarian Sector: from Castiglione Women to Present Days”.
This exhibition has the aim of witnessing the work of the women of Castiglione delle Stiviere, who showed courage and humanity by taking care of wounded soldiers during the battle of Solferino in 1859. It was thanks to these women, who organized themselves in order to provide humanitarian aid, that the very the idea of the Red Cross was born in Henry Dunant’s mind.
The spirit and initiative of the women of Castiglione represents, still today, a model of strength and courage for the volunteers of the International Red Cross and Red Cross Movement.
For this reason, during Solferino 2019, an ad hoc event will be organised in order to celebrate the work of women within the Red Cross, around the world. The occasion is an important chance to disseminate their stories, witness their courage, and point out the many challenges that women faced and continue to face in the field.
This event will launch an internal and external reflection within the Italian Red Cross and the International Movement that will go through all of 2019, culminating in an international conference in October 2019, where new strategies will be discussed and analysed, in order to favour the progress of women’s leadership in the humanitarian sector.
The inauguration of the exhibition is on June 21st at 6:00 PM, at Museo Internazionale della Croce Rossa (Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, 50, 46043 Castiglione delle Stiviere).
